Game of Birds
Started by Olomet

Game of Birds

There are two kinds of birds:
One sings prettily, looks nice, and is eaten if it ascends too high into the sky. The other kind are birds of prey—strong, proud, and armed with talons to draw blood.
And so, this game is made to show this truth: how the world is divided between the mighty and the weak.
Yet, when birds of a feather sit together, none is stronger.

Rules

Numbers 1, 3, and 5 represent birds of song, while 2, 4, and 6 represent birds of prey.
Each player rolls two dice on their turn.

  • If two dice show the same number, birds of a feather prevail, and the player counts it as a win.
  • If the numbers are different but represent the same kind of bird, nothing happens.
  • If the numbers are different and represent different kinds of birds, then the outcome depends on which kind has the higher number:
    • If the bird of song has the higher number, it has avoided its fate and escaped into the opponent’s nest. As a result, the other player may roll three dice instead of two on their next turn.
    • If the bird of prey has the higher number, the hunt was successful, and the player may roll a another die to attempt a pair with those rolled before.

How to Bet in the Game of Birds

There are three ways most oftly used: Chicken’s Feed, Pile of Bones, and Schemer’s Due.

  • Chicken’s Feed – Simple and immediate, like grain on the ground eaten right away. On each win, the winner receives the agreed-upon bet directly.
  • Pile of Bones – Only the strongest win; others are just bones to gnaw on. On each win, the winner adds the agreed-upon bet to a growing pile. The first player to roll double sixes wins the entire pile, and the game ends.
  • Schemer’s Due – For money means nothing when you're out at night and alone. For each win, the winner earns a favor from the opponent. These favors may range from a simple truthful answer or a keg of ale to something as severe as years of service. The severity of the favor must be agreed upon in advance.
